Austin Veterinary Emergency & Specialty (AVES)

Surgery & Orthopedics

Austin Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center treats a wide variety of orthopedic, soft tissue, oncologic, and neurologic conditions. AVES is staffed by board-certified veterinary surgeons who specialize in state-of-the-art surgical treatments for your pet. We practice progressive medicine without compromising care. We are always available to consult with your primary care veterinarian about your pet's diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care plan.

Orthopedic surgery encompasses a wide range of joint and bone procedures. One exciting and innovative aspect of orthopedic surgery is the ability to perform arthroscopy. Similar to human medicine, arthroscopy allows us to visualize your pet’s joints using small cameras. Because of the smaller incisions, your pet can go home sooner and experience less discomfort. Additionally, the high-definition camera provides a clearer view of the joint, helping us detect any abnormalities that might be missed with the naked eye.

Soft tissue surgery includes various surgical treatments, from foreign body removal to hernia repair to organ biopsies. We also address traumatic wounds (from dog fights to animals hit by cars) and oncologic surgeries, including mass removals and amputations. Your pet’s comfort and welfare are always our top priority, and we treat each pet as if they were our own.

Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) is a technique that reduces pain and promotes a faster recovery for your pet. During MIS, the surgeon makes small incisions to access the surgery site. A small camera is then inserted into the body through these incisions, allowing the veterinarian to view the surgical area through high-definition magnified images. This technique can be used to access various body cavities, including the abdomen, chest, and joints. Although the incisions are small, the magnified image helps the surgeon work with greater precision and detect issues that might otherwise be overlooked. MIS can often be applied to fracture repair with our specialized equipment (fluoroscopy) and implants (interlocking nails, cannulated screws, low-profile locking plates).
